No Tolerance For Inaccurate BDSM Articles

Lately there has been a steady stream of mainstream articles published about BDSM. I’m sure this is at least in part due to what we now refer to as the “50 Shades” effect. Some of them have been quite good. Unfortunately, some of these articles are penned by some rather clueless and judgmental writers.

Sometimes, even when the writers think they’re being objective, the underlying judgments and acceptance of myths around BDSM are still there. The end result is partially or totally inaccurate assessments of the real happenings within the BDSM scene. These bad articles need to be held accountable, and now someone has done that rather eloquently.

Please check out Andrea Zanin’s recent blog post titled do your homework (or, what goes wrong when writers don’t… and then write about kink) in which she rebukes and then coaches those writers who have produced the less than accurate pictures of what really happens among BDSM practitioners. She masterfully takes these bad articles to task for the lack of research that better writers should already understand is so vital to accurate portrayals or commentary.

Thanks to Andrea for writing this. Once you read it, if you have any thoughts about her post add them as a comment here. This stuff needs to be discussed as often as possible.
